Amitabh Bachchan’s Zanjeer, released in 1973, was a trendsetter. Ram Charan stepped into Amitabh’s shoes in Thoofan and teamed up with Apporva Lakhiya to pay tribute to Zanjeer. Ram Charan succeeded in potraying ‘Angry Youngman’ Vijay Khanna in his own style but director Apoorva Lakhiya failed to recreate the magic of Zanjeer of 70s.

ACP Vijay Khanna is an honest and dynamic police officer who never cares the criminals or politicians who back them. 22 transfers in the span of 5 years is a proof for his honesty. After troubling a politician in Hyderabad, he is transferred to Mumbai.

One day, a guy kills a Deputy Collector for which, Pinky (Priyanka Chopra) is a witness. Vijay Khanna investigates the case and finds Teja (Prakash Raj), the Lord of Oil Mafia, is behind the murder. When Vijay tries to bring Teja behind the bars, Teja uses his money and power to suspend Vijay from department. How Vijay destroys Teja with the help of Sher Khan (Srihari) and Jayadev (Thanikella Bharani), proves his innocence and gets back into department forms rest of the story.

Ram Charan has done a great job as an ACP. You’ll be disappointed if you expect entertainment and dances from him. Ram Charam sticked to the character of Vijay Khanna and strictly stayed away from cinematic liberties. Priyanka Chopra is hot in Pinky and Mumbai Police songs. She got no scope to show her mettle in terms of performance. Prakash Raj excelled as usual in the role of villain Teja. His MEOW episodes with Mahi Gill are hilarious. Srihari and Thanikella Bharani have done justice to their roles.

You need not deal with strong emotions when you make a mass entertainer. But when you have a serious subject in hand with angry youngman as its lead, you should come up with deep emotions and tight screenplay so that the audience would connect to the film. Director and co-screenplay writer Apoorva Lakhiya failed miserably in doing so. He borrowed the story from 1970s Zanjeer but forgot to borrow the emotions. Chemistry between hero and heroine is weak and so is the case between Vijay and Sher Khan. The only aspect in which Apoorva got passed is in handling the scenes between Charan and Prakash Raj.

Thoofan is technically brilliant. Gururaj Jois’ cinematography is excellent and perfectly gels with the mood of the film. Background score is okay but songs are an utter disappointment. Most of them are misplaced. Editing could have been better.

To be blunt, Thoofan is a poor remake of Zanjeer. In spite of great performances, the film fails to hold your interest, thanks to Apoorva’s poor narration. Lack of entertainment and mass elements will work against Thoofan. Ram Charan’s image may save the film as it did with Racha and Naayak.

Bottom Line: The storm fails to charm
