Story: Vijay ( Jagdish) is an army man on leave with his family at Mumbai. He is a happy go lucky man. As he wishes to holiday, circumstances think otherwise and pull him into a morass of terror plot. After a bomb blast which he witnesses, coincidental happenings draw him into a dead lock with Villain Vidyut Jamwal.

As a twelve member clan, he and his friends spoil the villain’s terror party and the villain tries to return the favor. Just as Vijay tries to protect his army clan, Villain proves smart and gets at his friends. How Vijay manages to save himself, his friends and his country in his own charismatic way forms the rest of the plot.

Performances: Vijay is pretty good as Major Jagdish. He underplayed his character well. Kajal Aggarwal offers loads of glamour in the movie without being sexy and the romantic track is equally adorable after Ghajini. Vidyut is good as the head of sleeper cells in Mumbai. Sathyan provides decent entertainment with his presence. Jayaram is okay in his limited role.

Technicalities: Story of the movie is adequate. Screenplay should have been better. Direction is decent in the first half. But the director couldn’t articulate story in a clear racy manner in the second half. The songs may just be okay, but Harris Jayaraj’s background score is surprisingly very effective. Lyrics spoiled the feel & situations in the songs. Sreekar Prasad’s editing does wonders to the film. The pacing is so good and the humor is so well infused into the narrative, it doesn’t divert your attention in the first half. Dialogues are adequate misses the punch. Art direction is good. Santosh Sivan’s cinematography makes even the streets of Mumbai look beautiful. Especially Vijay’s introduction & his smoke intro while saving girls are fabulously shot.

heymusiq Verdict: First half of the film is good. Hero’s strategy to offset villain is entertaining. Interval twist is good. The second half has lot of extended scenes. The climax failed to sustain interest. Most of the songs in the film appear as breakers to the narration. Positives of Thuppakki are Vijay, Kajal, First half, Bgm. On the flip side second half should have been dealt with a gripping screenplay. On the whole, Thuppakki – A mediocre and forgettable, but moderately entertaining experience.
