Review : Anamika - Nayantara – Classy Suspense Thriller

Sekhar Kammula had a disappointing outing with ‘Life is Beautiful’. The movie did not do well and his fans were disappointed. After a long gap, Sekhar Kammul

has now come out with a suspense thriller, a genre which is alien to him. Can he pull it off? Let us check out the review to find out.

Story:
The Bollywood film ‘Kahaani’ is the reference point for this film, but significant changes have been made to the storyline. A young NRI named Anamika (played by Nayanathara) comes to Hyderabad in search of her missing husband Ajay Shastry (Harshavardhan Rane).

She tries her best to trace the missing Ajay Shastry, but lecherous cops and unfamiliar territory prove to be significant hurdles. A kind young police officer named Parthasarathy (Vaibhav) is her only ally in a seemingly fruitless search.

As Anamika and Parthasarathy dig deeper, they realise that matters of National Security and counter-terrorism are at stake. People start getting killed and Ajay Shastry’s name is linked with a dreaded terrorist named Milan Damji.

What happened to Ajay Shastry? Who is Anamika? This is what the movie is all about.

Highlights :
- The second half of the film has very good pace and the racy screenplay is a big asset. The film’s graph starts to rise after the interval and it manages to keep rising right till the end, where everything culminates in an emotionally charged climax.

- This is a clean and classy film. Though you will not find Sekhar Kammula’s brand of sugary romance, you will see some tastefully executed scenes. The climax episode, where the many different shades of Nayanathara are mirrored in the many different avatars of Goddess Durga, is a testament to his fine taste.

- Keeravani’s background score is the lifeblood of the film. It manages to keep a slow first half alive and it generates terrific momentum in the second half. In fact, the rousing background score plays a major role in hiding some of the flaws in the film.

- Nayanathara and Vaibhav have given good performances. Vaibhav in particular has matured as an actor. Pasupathy has given a convincing performance as special officer Khan.

- Yandamuri’s experience with thrillers has come in handy for this movie, especially in the second half.

Weak Areas :
- The first half of the film is very slow and Sekhar Kammula takes too much time to establish the plot and the characters. There is no emotional connect in some key scenes in the first half. For example, without Keeravani’s background score it is difficult to even gauge the dominant emotion of the scene.

- Certain elements in the story should have been dealt with in a clearer manner. For example, how and when did Anamika come to know the truth about her husband? There are some scenes in the end credits that give us hints, but these should have been a part of the main film.

- If you have seen ‘Kahaani’, the twists in the story will not appeal to you. Even with the significant changes made to the story line, the basic twists remain similar.

The finer things :
Sekhar Kammula is a director who does not believe in spoon feeding his viewers. Certain points are left to the viewer’s imagination while others are conveyed in a very subtle way. Take this example. Nayanathara is shown as a woman who is extremely frightened of cockroaches. But during a crucial moment, she manages to overcome her fear and stays silent despite being in an uncomfortable situation with a cockroach crawling all over her feet. That gives us a glimpse of the steely nature of the lead character.

Cinematography is a big asset for the movie. Though there are a number of night shots in the film, they have been shot quite well. The film’s editor has done a very good job with the second half.

Verdict :
‘Anamika’ is a classy suspense thriller that definitely deserves a watch. For those who have never watched ‘Kahaani’, this film will be a very good watch. For those who have seen ‘Kahaani’, things are not as exciting, but they will still enjoy the second half. This is a nice, sensible film that should do well in multiplexes.

Critic’s Rating – 3.00 /5

Box Office Potential – Medium
